San Jose is one of the oldest communities around the lake. Not uncommon for the local Maya who live in these homes to plant a garden and find bits of ancient Maya figurines and pottery – it’s everywhere. A couple or three km down a small dirt road will take the ancient Maya community of Motul – great collection of smallish pyramids, stella and even a Maya ball court.
The park in the middle of this small Maya village is the center of everything. Great beach, eateries, bars with jukeboxes, fresh coconuts cut to order. Evenings, usually on the weekends, will see a collection of local Maya women selling 5Q plates of comida typica Maya – enjoy.
Be sure and check out the cable bridge over the jungle wash 3 blocks up the hill behind the libreria/farmacia.
