Here’s a Google map. There is absolutely no need to call us before you arrive. Phone service in Guatemala is poor at best.
Coming from Belize or Eastern/ Southern Guatemala…
Once you get to Santa Elena, wave at any Red three-wheeled tuktuk and they’ll stop. Ask the ‘Chauffeur’ to take you ‘barrio Bellos Horizontes’ (~15Q for one person with bags) once you get to Barrio Bellos Horizontes (9 minute max), tell your driver to take the first right, 6 blocks on the right, the White walled house. In Spanish: Barrio Bellos Horizontes, primer derecha, seis cuadras, ala derecha, la casa blanca murallada.
All travelers are routed direct to the island of Flores. Politely tell the driver/salesmen that you do not want to get off the bus in Flores and you will be getting off the bus in Santa Elena. They will do they can to encourage, entice and push you off the bus in Flores… so they can collect commissions for the plethora of over-priced not-green commercial hostel/hotel and tour/travel businesses in Flores – the focal point of consumption in Peten. It’s easy to avoid all the over-priced commercial nonsense in Flores, stay on the bus. Do not get off the bus in Flores.
Eventually the bus doors will close, the bus will leave Flores, go back across the causeway and continue a few blocks up the road to the Bus Terminal in Santa Elena. There are affordable taxis/tuktuks waiting at the bus station in Santa Elena, not so in Flores. There is no reason to pay more than 15Q each (including backpacks) to get to our place in Bellos Horizontes. If they try and charge you more, talk to another taxi/tuktuk. If they all say No, take your bags and start walking down the road – someone will chase you down – guaranteed.
Coming from Chiapas / Western Peten…
Once your shuttle from Palenque (assuming you are coming from Palenque) gets to San Benito, just before Flores/Santa Elena, have them drop you in front of the hospital in San Benito. Talk to the driver in-advance, or they’ll herd you into Flores to be assaulted by the various tour operators, etc. Once you’re safely out of the bus, wave at any Red three-wheeled tuktuk and they’ll stop. Ask the ‘Chauffeur’ to take you ‘barrio Bellos Horizontes’ (~5Q with bags) once you get to Barrio Bellos Horizontes (4 minutes max), tell your driver to take the first right, 6 blocks on the right, the walled house. In Spanish: primer derecha, seis cuadras, ala derecha, la casa murallada.
Fly into Flores
You’ll actually fly into Santa Elena, not Flores. Most flight information sources will refer to it as ‘Flores’ airport or Mundo Maya International. Best source for flight information is your local travel agent, Google, Expedia, etc. If you do decide to fly-in, include an extra $10US with your reservation and we’ll meet you at the airport.
